논문 초록 (Abstract)
Yokai are a manifestation in fantasy and imagination of the fears of pre-modern people. The perceptions and depictions of yokai have changed over time. Their traditional images were grotesque and dark, but the images gradually evolved into new forms in Japanese culture, and are now increasingly appearing in global popular culture, including video games. Thus yokai have gained a new life through their modern transformation. In this paper, I describe how we can understand and interpret the popularity and financial success of the games Yo-kai Watch and Pokémon GO in this cultural context. I will look at the essence of these two popular cultural phenomena through an analysis and exploration of the folkloric background of the yokai.
